Revolutionizing our energy system by centering communities requires energy justice to address power inequities and leveraging collective community voices to call for equitable climate policy.
Energy justice demands equity in social and economic participation in the energy system. It calls for remediating social, economic, and health burdens for those disproportionately harmed by the energy system. Our existing energy system maximizes profit for investor-owned utilities while often disregarding the frequent negative impacts it has on climate-impacted communities.
Initiative for Energy Justice
The Justice in 100 Scorecard is a rubric for evaluating 100% of laws passed by states and territories. The Initiative for Energy Justice (IEJ) was founded in 2018 by three lawyers of color entrenched in the debates concerning the nation’s transition away from fossil fuels and an extractive economy towards an equitable and renewable energy future.
